City of Piedmont Proclamation

WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters was founded by Carrie Chapman Catt in 1920 during the convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association as a "mighty political experiment" designed to help 20 million women carry out their new responsibilities as voters. It encouraged them to use their new power to participate in shaping public policy; and

WHEREAS, the Piedmont League of Women Voters was founded in October 1947 and has been active in the Piedmont community since its inception with the goal of empowering citizens to shape better communities worldwide; and

WHEREAS, since its founding, the Piedmont League of Women Voters has been active in the community and civic life, engaging in such important civic issues as schools, public health, juvenile justice, library services, voter registration, and many others; and

WHEREAS, for over 30 years, the Piedmont League of Women Voters has presented election forums prior to each local, regional, and statewide election to educate Piedmonters on the candidates and measures on which they will be asked to vote; and

WHEREAS, Piedmont is a more knowledgeable and engaged community due to the work of the League of Women Voters in our community;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert McBain, Mayor of the City of Piedmont, in recognition of its engagement in the Piedmont community and its contribution to the civic life of the City of Piedmont, proclaim the month of October 2017 as:

PIEDMONT LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS MONTH
