| Housing Element Virtual Community Workshop
December 2nd @ 5:30pm
| | On December 2, 2021, the City of Piedmont will host a virtual Housing Element Community Workshop. This will be the first public workshop about the 2023-2031 Housing Element update and Piedmont-specific data. The process is just beginning. Everyone is encouraged to engage in this big undertaking.

| | On the final evening of this Community Workshop Series, participants will be given a brief presentation of ELS’ programming and design effort over the past 4 weeks. ELS will present a final draft program outlining the potential features and a preferred conceptual direction showing how the final draft program elements fit within the project’s physical and budgetary requirements. Following the ELS presentation, everyone will again be invited to join a Table-Top Design Team, for a twenty-minute charrette – a process that allows each Design Team to comment on, critique, and evaluate the preferred conceptual direction.

With approximately 800 protestors in attendance, the demonstration is the fifth and largest in a series aimed at spurring the White House to take action to get the Senate to pass both the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Both pieces of legislation have been blocked in procedural votes.
“Redistricting is underway without the full protection of the Voting Rights Act, and midterm elections are around the corner. We are here today to send a message that President Biden must take action now to ensure the promise of our democracy and protect our freedom to vote,” said Dr. Deborah Ann Turner, board president of the League of Women Voters of the United States.
| | | | Take a deep dive with PPIC into California's water policy.
The Public Policy Institute of California recently held a three day virtual conference titled Seizing the Drought: Water Priorities for Our Changing Climate. "Water is central to how California adapts to a changing climate. ... Rising temperatures are making our winters shorter and our droughts more intense, outpacing our ability to manage water supplies and the natural environment. We need to act with urgency to adapt to these changes. And we need to rethink how we store water."

Looking for a way to serve your community? Please consider applying for the Measure UU Bond Oversight Committee. It is expected that the Bond Oversight Committee will meet two times per year throughout the project. More information about the committee can be found on the City of Piedmont website (below). Applications are due to City Hall on or before the deadline of Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at 5:00 pm.

| | | | Take Action: Give Input on Draft County Maps
The redistricting process is drawing to a close. Now is your chance to give input before maps are finalized for the next decade. The Alameda County Board of Supervisors is seeking public input on draft maps at their next redistricting meeting on December 2 at 6pm. You may also email your comments to redistricting@acgov.org or submit a comment on the county's redistricting website.
| | | | Take Action: Give Public Input on Sheriff Oversight
Assembly Bill 1185 was signed into law by Governor Newsom in September 30, 2020. This bill authorizes a county to establish a sheriff oversight board as well as an office of the inspector general. Alameda County is in process of implementing this law and is now seeking public input. The Alameda County Council of the League of Women Voters advocates strongly for the effective implementation of this law.
We urge all of our members to attend the meeting for District 5 on December 13 at 6pm.

| Great Decisions 2022
8-Week Series Starting in January
| | Great Decisions is back! LWVP has been hosting Great Decisions discussion groups since 1991 with a short hiatus last year due to the pandemic.
Great Decisions is America's largest discussion program on world affairs with materials and resources produced by the Foreign Policy Association. The program model involves reading the Great Decisions Briefing Book, watching the DVD and meeting in a Discussion Group to discuss the most critical global issues facing America today. Each year, eight topics are chosen by a panel of experts. The grassroots, face-to-face model adopted by Great Decisions more than 50 years ago continues today, with tens of thousands of participants taking part in discussions nationwide annually.
