January Event with Dr. George Rutherford! COVID-19 Update: Are We Any Closer to The End?

Back by popular demand! Please join LWVP on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. on Zoom or on our YouTube channel to hear the latest on Covid-19 from one of our favorite speakers: internationally renowned epidemiologist and Piedmont resident, Dr. George Rutherford. As we are all aware, Dr. Rutherford has been instrumental in helping the Bay Area contend with Covid and is quoted in the media almost daily.

Since last speaking with LWVP in May, many of Dr. Rutherford’s predictions came true about the value of mask wearing and the timing of vaccines becoming available.  What are Dr. Rutherford’s predictions for the course of the Covid-19 virus in 2021?  And when will life return to normal?  Viewers also can ask Dr. Rutherford questions during the discussion portion of the event.  More information here.

ADFS Screening of Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution on 1/7

Watch a free screening of the award-winning documentary Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution presented by Appreciating Diversity Film Series and participate in a  lively talk and Q&A with co-directors Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht on Thursday, January 7, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

No one at Camp Jened could’ve imagined that those summers in the woods together would be the beginnings of a revolution. Directors Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht deliver a rousing film about a group of campers turned activists who shaped the future of the disability-rights movement, and changed accessibility legislation for everyone.

Just down the road from Woodstock, Camp Jened was a camp for disabled teens. Filled with the spirit, music, and humor of the era, Newnham and LeBrecht ‘s film speaks to the seeds of empowerment that were planted at Camp Jened. Incredible camp footage from 1971 captures how the campers were finally seen beyond their disabilities. Milestones in the disability-rights movement intersect with LeBrecht’s personal story and the stories of several Camp Jened alums, including then-counselor Judy Heumann. Heumann goes on to drive the effort for disability rights, playing an indispensable role in historic protests leading to the Americans with Disabilities Act. Crip Camp shines a bright light on a paramount and overlooked civil-rights battle, emboldening the disability community to come together and spark great change.

Crip Camp is available on Netflix or free on YouTube.  Read more here and register to get the Zoom link for the January 7 conversation with the directors.
