LWVP Cocktail Hour on Thursday, February 25th at 5:00 p.m.

Join League of Women Voters Piedmont (LWVP) on Thursday, February 25, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. for an informal conversation about our program planning priorities. At our program planning meeting we came to the consensus to recommend LWVC focus on water resources, education, and criminal justice reform.  We came to the consensus to focus locally on housing equity and oversight of the implementation of Measure UU. We will talk about what these priorities mean to us and discuss ideas for implementing them.

The Zoom room will be open from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. You don't have to be a League member to join. Come for five minutes, the whole hour or anywhere in between.  We hope to see you there!

Next LWVP Virtual Program: Housing the Homeless in the Time of COVID-19 on March 2, 2021

Margot Kushel, MD, the Director of the UCSF Center of Vulnerable Populations and the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative at ZSFG, will present her latest research on solutions to housing the homeless in the time of COVID-19.  Her research aims to prevent and end homelessness and mitigate the effects of housing instability on healthcare outcomes.  Dr. Kushel works with diverse stakeholders to implement programmatic and policy changes based on her research. She is the primary investigator of several multi-year studies on homeless populations in the Bay Area from 2012 to the present.

This program will take place on Tuesday, March 2 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Register here for the Zoom information. You can watch the program on our YouTube channel as well.  Dr. Kushel will answer audience-member questions from 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The program is free and open to the public.

Dr. Kushel is a Professor of Medicine at University of California San Francisco, Division Chief and Director of the UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations, and Director of the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.  She is a practicing general internist at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.  Dr. Kushel's research examines the causes and consequences of homelessness and housing instability, with the goal of preventing and ending homelessness and ameliorating the effects of homelessness on health.  She speaks at a local, state and national level about homelessness, and provides testimony to legislative bodies.  She received her AB from Harvard College, her MD from Yale and completed residency, chief residency and fellowship in internal medicine at UCSF.

Bay Area League Day: Saturday, March 6, 2021

The League of Women Voters confirmed its support for diversity, equity, and inclusion principles during its national convention last June. Have you been concerned about how to determine if your local community is doing all it should to implement equity?  How we can create a more equitable economy?  The Bay Area League's annual educational day for 2021 focuses on tools and measurements that implement equity and further our goals for a just and inclusive society.

"Things that Matter" Community Quilt Project

The Piedmont Art Fund would like to invite all members of the community to creatively express the "Things that Matter” in a community quilt. They will eventually display the “Things that Matter” quilt, with the interwoven and diverse narratives to capture this unique time, in the new PHS Theater building. Any funds raised will be used exclusively towards inclusive visual and performing arts programs at PUSD.

They are launching the quilt project in February during Black History Month, to honor the Black Lives Matter Movement. As March is Art Month, we plan on weaving our creative community stories and unveiling the quilt in a public open space. As this is a community-building event for all ages, please remember only school appropriate images can be included.
