LWV Bay Area Community Conversations | Environmental Justice

The first in a series (through 2021-22) of Bay Area Community Conversations presented by the Bay Area League.

Join us for a Brown Bag Lunch Dialogue on Environmental Justice featuring a discussion with leaders from APEN (Asian Pacific Environmental Network) and BARHII (Bay Area Regional Health Inequities Initiative).

Piedmont Community Pool Presentation of Concepts and Charrette
November 16th at 7pm
Piedmont Pool Events

This evening starts with a statement of welcome followed by a brief presentation of ELS’ programming and design effort over the previous four weeks. ELS will present a draft program outlining potential features and the size and scope of various proposed project elements. Two to three concepts will show how the program elements fit within the project’s site constraints and budgetary requirements. Following the ELS presentation, all present will be invited to join a Table-Top Design Team for a twenty-minute charrette.

Piedmont Pool Town Hall
 

This event included an overview of the design process, some highlights of design aspects of newly built neighboring community pools, bond oversight, and considerations for net zero carbon emissions.

If you would like to be more involved in the design process, there are a number of opportunities for doing so.

  1. complete the city's survey to give your input and ask questions
  2. attend one or both of the two remaining workshops on November 16th and December 14th
  3. attend and give public comment at upcoming Pool Advisory Committee meetings

City to clarify process for selecting mayor, vice mayor
 
Read the article in the Piedmont Exedra that addresses "built-in inequities in the city’s mayoral and vice mayor selection process" and the city's plans to establish a formal policy. LWVP wrote a letter to City Council in January of 2021 requesting transparency in the process for selecting the city's mayor and vice mayor. We are pleased to see the city taking these steps.

The Alameda County Board of Supervisors is seeking public input on draft maps at their next redistricting meeting on November 16 at 6pm. You may also email your comments to redistricting@acgov.org or submit a comment on the county's redistricting website.

California Districts 2021

Take Action: Give Feedback on California District Maps

The California Citizens Redistricting Commission approved draft maps on November 10, 2021. You can give feedback at meetings between November 17th and November 23rd. Download the flyer below for the complete schedule. You can also submit a feedback form.

Join us Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at 10:00 a.m., for an informal conversation with other civic-minded individuals. Learn about our upcoming programs, voter registration efforts and other ways you can get involved.
 
The Zoom room will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. You don't have to be a League member to join. Come for five minutes, the whole hour or anywhere in between. We hope to see you there!

Great Decisions 2022
8-Week Series Starting in January
Great Decisions is back! LWVP has been hosting Great Decisions discussion groups since 1991 with a short hiatus last year due to the pandemic.
 
Great Decisions is America's largest discussion program on world affairs with materials and resources produced by the Foreign Policy Association. The program model involves reading the Great Decisions Briefing Book, watching the DVD and meeting in a Discussion Group to discuss the most critical global issues facing America today. Each year, eight topics are chosen by a panel of experts. The grassroots, face-to-face model adopted by Great Decisions more than 50 years ago continues today, with tens of thousands of participants taking part in discussions nationwide annually.
