Join us as we continue with our 2022 Defending Democracy Speaker Series. Rob Richie, president and CEO of FairVote will speak on Ranked Choice Voting and other election reforms. It’s easy to see that something is broken in American politics. It’s harder to figure out why – or how – to move forward. Join us to learn more about solutions that give voters more voice and greater choice in their elections.
The talk will be held live on Zoom and YouTube and will include an audience question and answer session. This event is free and open to the public.

The guest speaker for this event is Jeanine Jones, the Interstate Resources Manager and Drought Manager for the California Department of Water Resources, and California Representative for the Colorado River Board. This meeting is free and open to the public.

Changing Souls, Changing Lives, Creating Community
Monday, January 17th at 11am | | Committing to our own personal and family anti-racist learning journeys and being intentional about racial equity is the focus of Piedmont’s 25th annual MLK Day Celebration.
This year’s virtual program, co-sponsored by PADC and the City of Piedmont, will feature performances by:

- The Oakland Interfaith Youth Choir

Voting Rights Discussion Launches 2022 Defending Democracy Speaker Series
| | The League of Women Voters of Piedmont launched its Defending Democracy Speaker Series on January 11th, 2022 with a discussion on Voting Rights from Carol Moon Goldberg, president of the League of Women Voters of California. | | | The presentation covered the history of voting rights in the U.S. and California, voter protections currently in place in California, successes the League has had in securing voting rights, federal voting rights legislation, and what we can do to support voting rights. | League of Women Voters Thanks President Biden for Directing Senate to End Filibuster
| | On January 11, 2022, the League of Women Voters of the United States CEO Virginia Kase Solomón issued a statement in response to President Biden and Vice President Harris’s speech at the Atlanta University Center Consortium. Virginia was honored to attend the event on behalf of the League of Women Voters.
“The League will continue our pressure on the US Senate and the Biden Administration to get federal voting rights legislation across the finish line."

Our Program Planning meeting is open to all LWVP members and this year will focus on LWVUS and the Bay Area League.
Program planning is the grassroots process where we identify areas of focus for the state and national Leagues. This year, we will focus on how our work will impact the Campaign for Making Democracy Work® as well as what LWVUS positions we intend to use in education and lobbying. We will also review the Bay Area League positions.
We are sad that we won't be sharing soup together in person, but please settle in with your own soup and share your ideas with us!

Our next Board meeting is Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at 6:30pm and will be followed immediately by part two of our program planning meeting, which will focus solely on our local priorities. Please review our Local Positions and think about what you would like LWVP to focus on in our community.
These meetings are open to all League members. If you would like to learn more about the League or are interested in becoming more involved, we'd love for you to join us.If you would like to participate in the board meeting you may join us at 6:30pm. If you only wish to participate in Program Planning, please join us at 7:15pm.

| | | Great Decisions 2022
Registration Now Open - first meeting Feb. 1st
| | The League of Women Voters of Piedmont has been hosting Great Decisions discussion groups for over three decades. The discussion group focuses on world affairs with materials and resources produced by the Foreign Policy Association. We will be meeting virtually this year via Zoom every other Tuesday (at 1pm and 7pm) starting on February 1st, 2022 and going through May 10th, 2022.
This group is open to the public. You do not need to be a League member to join. This has historically been an extremely popular discussion group and we hope you'll join us this year!
