Please join the League of Women Voters of Piedmont and Piedmont Connect on Wednesday, September 7th, 2022 at 4pm for a discussion with Sara Paul of Watch Duty, a non-profit founded in the wildlands of Sonoma County to provide real-time push notifications about wildfires in California. 

Sara is a dynamic speaker who will help us to understand the real wildfire risks (to life, property, health, etc.) in the era of accelerating climate disruption. Her talk will include tips for identifying wildfire vulnerabilities in our homes and landscape, evacuation planning, and staying informed as events develop.

Women Win the Vote
The League of Women Voters Eden Area will be holding a free educational program describing how women in California won the right to vote. The program will include a short introductory film, "Women Vote, Women Win; Why I Vote” by the National Women’s History Museum.

Roxann Lewis, who is the LWVEA's Vice President and Program Planning Team Leader will provide the context for the featured video, “California Women Win the Vote.” All are welcome!
 

How to Maintain the Public’s Rights and Its Safety

This event is sponsored by the Santa Clara County Leagues of Women Voters. Learn from an expert panel on the challenges of policing and ensuring fair treatment. The panel will discuss objectives of law enforcement organizations, accountability, response to societal racism, unique US armed environment, ‘Protect & Serve’ vs tendency towards militarization, community responsibilities, what is a better way going forward?

The Nature Conservancy - California and Global

This program is presented by the League of Women Voters Berkeley Albany Emeryville. Emma Brower will be presenting some general information about The Nature Conservancy, their External Affairs efforts in the California State Legislature, a recent victory on plastic pollution in the ocean, and their broader oceanic program.

A Climate-Resilient and Equitable Water Future for California

The League of Women Voters of San Francisco would like to invite you to join them for the next of a “Spotlight On” series of educational events: A Climate-Resilient and Equitable Water Future for California. This is the first of two events that LWVSF will be hosting on water in California, a pressing issue as California and the Bay Area struggle with climate change, drought, and water crisis. This first event will cover the history of water systems and infrastructure in California, demand and what needs to change, and visions for responding to future water use and needs.

Featured speaker Dr. Newsha Ajami is the Chief Strategy and Development Officer for Research in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and a mayoral appointee to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. A member of the League of Women Voters of California’s Water Committee will discuss the League’s positions on water resources, what we are doing to support these positions, and what issues we are monitoring and actions we are recommending.

Whether you've recently joined Piedmont schools or moved into the neighborhood in the last couple of years, please join us for an evening of socializing, light bites, and free ice cream on Friday, September 16 from 6:30-7:30pm before Movie Night in the Park. You'll have a chance to meet fellow community members as well as city and school district leaders in our community.

National Voter Registration Day Turns 10!

We’re excited to be part of a national effort to strengthen our democracy by registering voters on this year’s National Voter Registration Day, which will take place on September 20, 2022 and marks the 10th anniversary of this nationwide celebration of democracy. Keep an eye on our calendar for details to come and in the meantime, check to make sure your own registration is up to date!

 If so, please take the time to watch the recording of the city's Housing Element 102 Information Session. This session focused on four main topics: 1) Housing Element and the Regional Housing Needs Allocation Basics, 2) Overview of the Draft Housing Element Sites Inventory, 3) Recap of the Direction the City Council Provided to Staff at its August 1, 2022 Meeting, and 4) Update on the Status of Piedmont’s Housing Element Process, Next Steps and Timeline to Certification.

Two years ago, you helped us pass the Racial Justice Act to combat discrimination based on race, ethnicity, or national origin in criminal sentences and convictions. Now we need your help to extend the Racial Justice Act to ensure that it protects all Californians. AB 256 will soon be on the Governor's desk – tell Governor Newsom to sign the Racial Justice Act for All into law!
