Please join us on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. to hear Paul Gosselin from the California Department of Water Resources talk about sustainable groundwater management in California.  Learn about how California is implementing the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) and adjusting to climate change, while trying to balance agriculture’s pressing water needs.

Know Your Rights California Public Meetings LWVC and First Amendment Coalition
Hosted by the League of Women Voters of California, the First Amendment Coalition’s open-government experts will provide an in-depth presentation on your rights to access public meetings in California. The presentation will focus on the Ralph M. Brown Act’s open-meeting requirements for local legislative bodies, including recent law changes that affect teleconferencing and where First Amendment speech protections intersect with the government’s ability to manage proceedings.

This year’s in person program, co-sponsored by PADC and the City of Piedmont, will feature performances by New Style Motherlode Entertainment and Oaktown Jazz Workshop.

Speakers include Corrina Gould of the Sogorea Te' Land Trust, Mayor of Piedmont Jen Cavenaugh, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Dr. Claybourne Carson the Founding Director of Stanford's King Research & Education Institute, and keynote speaker Kate Schatz, co-author of Do the Work: An Anti-Racist Activity Book. Also featured this year is an Art & Essay Showcase.

Appreciating Diversity Film Series is proud to present Through the Night as the MLK Day inspirational film on Thursday, January 19, 2023, at 7 PM, in the Ellen Driscoll Playhouse, 325 Highland Avenue, Piedmont, CA.

 This free, 76 minute film will be followed by a discussion of current East Bay childcare services led by BANANAS Child Care and Family Resources Program CEO, Kym Johnson.

January 6th Remembrance and Action sundown vigil
Event Recap
Leagues throughout Alameda County and California hosted a January 6th Remembrance and Action sundown vigil to remember the insurrection on January 6, 2021 and take action.

The event featured LWV of the United States CEO, Virginia Kase Solomón; Carol Moon Goldberg, President of LWV California; and Roma Dawson, President of LWV of the Bay Area. The evening closed with a call to action.

LWVP Internship Program
Application Deadline: February 15, 2023
League volunteer with student in classroom
Know a student who wants to make a difference in their community and engage their fellow students in the democratic process? LWVP's interns learn skills to become effective communicators and leaders while taking action to better our community.
 
Spring Internship Application Deadline: extended to February 15, 2023

PHS, MHS, Piedmont residents attending private schools, and local college and university students are welcome to apply for the LWVP Internship Program. Students will learn about the League, Voting Rights, and Voter Registration, and help us reach out to young people in our community.

Program Planning 2023

Our Program Planning meetings are open to members and non-members and this year we will focus on setting priorities locally and for LWV California. We will have two separate virtual meetings: one focusing on state priorities and one focusing on local priorities.

Program planning is the grassroots process where we identify areas of focus for local, state, and national Leagues. Where should the League focus its energy over the next two years? We hope you join us to share your ideas!
