New Models for Social Justice recap

Published on 6/30/2020

On June 30, 2020, LWVP hosted a successful event on New Models for Social Justice and Police Reform with Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers and our own Nancy Beninati who is a California Department of Justice attorney. Chief Bowers spoke about police reform within the Piedmont Police Department that began before the killing of George Floyd and subsequent protests. He spoke about the small number of African American leadership in police departments in the state of California and referenced the progress the PPD has made on the 8 can't wait suggested reforms. More information can be found in the department's Transparency Portal. Nancy described her two decades of work on the intersection of police practices and civil rights. She focused on bias statistics and the Racial and Identity Profiling Act of 2015. The event was attended by over 65 community members and concluded with a question and answer session. A recording of our livestream of the event is available here.

Police Chief Jeremy Bowers was kind enough to sit down with us for an additional half hour several days after the event to answer the questions we had been unable to get to on June 30th. A recording of that conversation is available on our YouTube channel.
